Abstract
Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) is an economically and culturally
important leafy vine widely cultivated for its aromatic and medicinal leaves.
Leaf yield and quality are significantly influenced by soil properties and
nutrient management practices. This study evaluated the effect of different
soil types and fertilizer treatments on the growth and yield of betel leaf
under field conditions. Three soil types—sandy loam, clay loam, and silty
loam—were tested along with three fertilizer regimes: organic compost,
inorganic NPK (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium), and a combined organic-inorganic
application. Growth parameters, including vine length, number of leaves per
vine, leaf area, and chlorophyll content, were recorded at regular intervals.
Yield was measured in terms of total leaf weight per vine and per hectare at
harvest. Results indicated that silty loam soil with combined organic and
inorganic fertilizers produced the highest vine growth and leaf yield. Sandy
loam showed moderate growth but required higher fertilizer input, while clay
loam restricted vine development due to poor drainage and compaction.
Application of organic compost improved leaf quality, enhancing leaf thickness,
aroma, and overall market value. Integrated nutrient management proved more
effective than sole organic or inorganic application in maximizing both yield
and quality. These findings highlight the importance of soil selection and
balanced fertilization for sustainable betel leaf cultivation, providing
practical guidance for farmers aiming to improve productivity while maintaining
soil health.
